Birmingham Bulls fans were treated to some exciting games this weekend at the Pelham Civic Complex. Friday night, the Bulls built a 3-0 lead over the Knoxville Ice Bears in the first period and would end up tied 5-5 at the end of regulation. After a 5 minute, 3-on-3 overtime period failed to settle things, the game went to a shoot out. The first 5 shooters produced 2 goals for each team but when Josh Harris scored his second goal of the shootout, Bulls goalie Charlie Millen shut down the final shot by the Ice Bears to give his team the 6-5 victory. Harris is credited with the game winning goal, his third of the night, and a “hat trick”. Taylor Dickin, Shane Topf and John Rey also scored in this thriller.
Saturday night’s rematch proved just as thrilling. Taylor Dickin got the Bulls started as his goal gave Birmingham a 1-0 lead at the first intermission but Knoxville pulled ahead with 2 goals in the 2nd period. Shane Topf and Craig Simchuk score in the 3rd to give Birmingham the late lead. Knoxville however, pulled their goalie after Birmingham was penalized giving them a 6-on-4 advantage. This allowed them to tie the game with 58 seconds left in regulation. This time the overtime period proved to be quickly decisive as Bulls newcomer Caleb Apperson nets his first professional goal in just his second game on a tryout contract with the Bulls. He seems to be dead set on a full time gig and the fans gave him their recommendation via applause as the celebration erupted in the arena. Charlie Millen again provides the net minding needed to secure the win in the 4-3 decision.
Mississippi and Roanoke, the 7th and 8th place teams respectively, both won Friday and lost Saturday which allowed the Bulls to close the gap to 3 points in the push to the playoffs. Here’s hoping they can “March” into contention. The Bulls will enjoy some time on home ice in preparation for next weekend’s games vs Pensacola here at the Pelham Civic Complex, Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 7:00. Come on out and support your Birmingham Bulls. We’d love to see you there. Go Bulls Go!! We Bullieve!!
